What is the Patents Unit?

The BBRI Patents Unit is an information service regarding patents for SME’s in the Belgian construction industry.
The BBRI Patents Unit was created in collaboration with the Service for Intellectual Property and with the support of the Service for Quality and Safety, both divisions of the Federal Public Service Economy, SME’s, Self-employment and Energy.

The BBRI Patents Unit is one of the eight Belgian PATLIB centres, each with one or more areas of expertise. The BBRI Patents Unit focuses on construction-related industries. Other sectors can contact one of the other PATLIB centres for patent information.

Who is active in the Patents Unit?

The Patents Unit consists of a team of engineers specialized in construction. They offer advice on how to obtain a patent and how to use patent information in business and research. For technical support in specific fields, the advisors of the Patents Unit rely on specialized BBRI researchers.

What is the aim of the Patents Unit?

The Patents Unit aims to achieve optimal use of patents in innovation in the construction industry. On the one hand, the unit provides information on launching and protecting inventions. On the other hand, it offers advice on exploiting the scientific knowledge contained in existing patents.

How does the Patents Unit work?

The Patents Unit provides individual and collective support for SME’s in the construction industry.

Individual support consists of personalized advice, in person or by mail. Construction SME’s can contact the BBRI Patents Unit for answers to patent questions and for searches in the patent databases free of charge.

Collective support consists of publications and workshops, announced on the website calendar. Through its website, the Patents Unit provides information on the how? and why? of patents.

Note

Because the Patents Unit focuses on Belgian construction SME’s, its website is currently only available in French and Dutch.
